Coach Taylor gets more pressure from Dillon; mostly questions regarding how the team will win without Jason Street. Matt Saracen the backup quarterback, who is referred to "Sore-n-son" by the local radio announcer, struggles to learn the offense and takes heat from all the coaches after repeated mistakes during practice. Matt also works his job at Twisters and takes care of his grandma, as he is the man of the house while his father is in Iraq. In the midst of all the question and solution searching Jason Street lay in the hospital awaiting conformation whether he will walk again. Lyla visits Jason regularly and reminds him of their future plans and remains optimistic about his situation; meanwhile, Riggins constantly thinks about Streets injury and continues to drink. Tim's embarrassing behavior upsets Tyra which leads to her and Smash going to his place on a sunny afternoon for some fooling around! However, Ms. Williams comes home and surprises the two and forces Tyra to walk home!

Doctors diagnose Jason's injury. His spinal cord was damaged and caused this lower body to become paralyzed. The news shocks Coach Taylor, the team, and town. Jason remains strong throughout the ordeal while Lyla still believes he will walk again.

Coach Taylor travels to Matt's house the night before the game and takes him to the football field. There he advises Matt and plays the sound of a crowd over the stadium speakers, teaching Matt to speak over the noise and command his team. The kick-off at the game ends the show...
