Football is the one thing that brings the town of Dillon together. The Panthers are lead by Quarterback Jason Street, the town's hero, who is considered the number one football player in America. A scout from Notre Dame attends a preseason practice and comments to Jason's parents their son is the best quarterback he has ever seen. Tim Riggins, Dillon's rebel, shows up to practice drunk, and the new head coach Taylor makes Tim feel it during hitting drills. The team also interviews with different media outlets about the upcoming season. Lyla Garrity, the cheerleader and Street's girlfriend, shows her obsession with Jason and the two have a good kissing moment outside the Garrity house. New Coach Eric Taylor takes the head coaching job after being an assistant for years. He had been Jason's coach since pee-wees. After his wife Tami mentions buying a house, Coach Taylor follows up on one that Tami showed interest in; however, does not buy, instead he chooses to wait until after the game. Dillon holds a dinner for the team and community before the first game where the mayor and other important people speak, as well as cocky running back, Brain Smash Williams. Tyra moves her stuff too, hitting on Jason in front of Lyla, and also getting friendly with Smash in front of Tim who she appears to be on-and-off with.

During Dillon's first game the Panthers find themselves down in the forth-quarter to the Westerbee Cougars. Driving his team down field, Jason Street throws an interception and gets hurt making a dangerous but important touchdown saving tackle. Jason could not move and was taken off in a stretcher. Matt Saracen, who was unknown by many, stepped into the quarterback spot. Under the wide-eyed helpless looks of the silent Dillon crowd, Matt lead the Panthers to victory launching a deep wide-open touchdown pass after time expired. The Panthers won; however, their hero still lay in the hospital breathing but motionless.

Coach Taylor ends with these strong and powerful words:

"We will all at some time in our lives, fall. Life is so very fragile, we are all vulnerable, and we will all at some point in our lives, fall, we will all fall.
We must carry this in our hearts, that what we have is special, that it can be taken from us, and that when it is taken from us, we will be tested. We will be tested to our very souls. We will all be tested.
It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves."
