Hi Everyone --

I'm a Ph.D. student working on a dissertation on the way that fans deal with their favorite shows, focusing on the treatment of Friday Night Lights and the ways that fans have reacted and/or "saved" the show.

If any of you will be willing to respond to a few questions, I would be so grateful!  Your words would be used to construct fan reactions and eventually end up in print.

If you're interested, please look at the questions below:

1.)  If you could describe what happened in Season One in three or four sentences, what would you write?

2.)  What really pulls you into Friday Night Lights?  Is it all about hot stars or is there something more?

3.)  Do you feel that you can relate with what happens onscreen?  How?

4.)  Who is your favorite character?  Why?

5.)  How did you start watching FNL?  On tv, or on DVD?  Were you immediately hooked or did it take a little while?

6.)  How did you feel when you learned that FNL might  not get picked up for a second season?  Why?

My thanks, ahead of time, for all your hard work.  I too am a huge fan of FNL -- thus my interest in how other fans interact with the show.

I doubt you're a PhD student - more likely you're an NBC marketing assistant. If you are with NBC, I have some thoughts on how you could be marketing this show. Let's just say you're doing better this year than you were last year marketing-wise. But the main problem this year is you're focusing so many marketing messages on the fact that CRITICS love the show. Why not get first-person video testimonials from VIEWERS?

Anyhow:

1.)  If you could describe what happened in Season One in three or four sentences, what would you write?

Coach Taylor and his family start another coaching job, this time in Dillon, Texas, a typical West Texas town where high school football is universally revered. Season one explores the trials of the new coach, his players and their families in a gritty, realistic look at small-town life, adolescence and parenting in the new millennium.

2.)  What really pulls you into Friday Night Lights?  Is it all about hot stars or is there something more?

It's about the realism (last season, anyway). Most teen-oriented shows have their problems wrapped up in a neat little package after 60 minutes. Not so with FNL. We have watched these characters grow and change in such a brief time, and it's rewarding to see a show that doesn't focus on the saccharine or the sensational - it really toes the line well, which is what makes it so real.

3.)  Do you feel that you can relate with what happens onscreen?  How?

Yes, I am constantly reminded of high school. I did not play football and I did not grow up in Texas, but the experiences are very similar because they are universal - alienation, finding "yourself," dealing with parents, teachers, coaches, etc.

4.)  Who is your favorite character?  Why?

Julie, because Aimee Teegarden is smoking hot. No, seriously, I love Julie's character because she has changed the most between seasons, I think. And I think Aimee's acting skills are amazing. It's nice to see her on a show like this and not some Disney Channel drivel.

5.)  How did you start watching FNL?  On tv, or on DVD?  Were you immediately hooked or did it take a little while?

On TV - I liked it immediately.

6.)  How did you feel when you learned that FNL might  not get picked up for a second season?  Why?

I thought "here we go again - stupid networks wouldn't know a meaningful, artistic show if it bit them on the ass. Looks like we're in store for more "Briefcase or No Briefcase" and "Survivor: East L.A." and "Law and Order: Tranny Hookers in Heat."

I do promise I am a Ph.D. student.  I can whip out some big Ph.D. student terms for you if you'd like, but suffice to say that this is something on which I'm authentically interested in publishing, but I need responses from people like you to complete my research (or at least to get a good sampling of how REAL fans feel about the show).  Thanks for your very compelling answers.

Can you explain the academic nature of your dissertation?  Are you a marketing PhD?  I would be glad to contribute, but I would like to know more first.
